It’s almost always a staple to find ourselves running on caffeine and racing against deadlines when October exams start the nights of cram sessions.

However, those long hours may feel a little easier for us academic weapons, as we’ve rounded up some of the best productivity nooks on campus.

These study spots can make all the difference:

1. Find focus in the UST library Individual Study Rooms

The newly opened Individual Study Rooms (ISRs) at the Miguel de Benavides Library are designed for a serious lock-in session. It’s a distraction-free zone and the best choice for focus.

These eight rooms are always in demand thanks to their reliable internet access, numerous power outlets, and solo air conditioning. Plus, the library’s low-noise environment makes it a perfect place for concentration and productivity.

Reservations are accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. through the reference and information services staff, at least two hours in advance. Each cubicle can be booked for up to three hours per day.

Pro tip: Come by early when it’s least crowded to secure the best spot. If the ISRs are full, my personal preference for a cozy spot is the Humanities Section on the fifth floor, but the first floor quarters are always open with four discussion rooms readily available for groups of three to reserve.

2. Study Chemistry at Benavides Lane

They say chemistry sparks at Benavides Lane — and sometimes that spark comes from finally understanding a tricky Biochemistry equation, reviewing laws for your next PolSci exam, finishing a coding exercise, or cramming for any subject under the sun.

With benches scattered along the lane and just the right amount of shade, it’s a casual spot for a quick review session right at the center of campus life.

The open-air breeze cools off our overloaded minds and reminds us to “touch grass” between study breaks. Surrounded by the trees and scenic spots, it’s the perfect breather when you’re feeling burnt out–a small pause that helps you come back to your reviewers with a clearer, calmer head.

3. Enjoy a breather or study sesh at gazebos

Around the University are several gazebos, especially situated in front of the Buenaventura Paredes, O.P. (BGPOP) Building or the Beato Angelico Building.

These little corners provide shade from the sun, a spot to lounge between classes, and a hangout place with friends. During exam week, these gazebos become cozy study spaces, ideal to review your notes, catch up on readings, or to simply enjoy a breather.

Solar-powered charging hubs at the gazebos are on the way, but for now, it’s advisable to bring a portable charger just in case.

Review sessions don't have to be boring. With a view of the field or grandstand and friends around to bounce questions off, the gazebos host a space for a relaxed and collaborative experience.

4. From org meetings to prepping for exams at TYK

Known to many as “TYK (pronounced as tyke),” the Tan Yan Kee Student Center serves as a hub for university-wide organizations.

The building thrives when they’re busy planning events, holding meetings, and engaging in daily activities at the headquarters on the top floors.

Although it’s fairly busy, the TYK lobby doubles as a study area, complete with round tables and chairs, to get in the zone when we need a place to study.

It’s a no-frills setup, and since the building is at the far end, its lobby is usually quiet with fewer people walking around. For a longer stay, bring a portable charger to review all digital notes.

5. Study by the fountain at QPark

The Quadricentennial Park (QPark) is often a venue for many student fairs and events. But outside those fun times, it’s one of the most peaceful spots on campus.

Afternoon here feels cooler as the fountain splashes in the background. Lining QPark are tables and chairs that are havens for solo reading or group study sessions under the trees.

This area is also close to the Main Building, home to the College of Science, Faculty of Pharmacy, and Faculty of Civil Law.

QPark is a silent retreat, making it a conducive environment for reviewing.

6. Review on the bleachers at QPAV

Many students chill at the Quadricentennial Pavilion (QPAV) to escape the heat or catch a glimpse of Thomasian athletes in training.

With a 5,000-seat capacity, there’s always a spot in the bleachers with just enough quiet to sneak in some review..

The constant blast of air conditioning makes this a go-to refuge on hot afternoons, and if you’re good at multitasking, you might even squeeze in some study time while watching a training session unfold in front of you – all while manifesting the #RoadtoQPAV dream.

7. Beat the heat and exams at BGPOP

The grand lobby of Buenaventura Paredes, O.P. (BGPOP) Building is open to everyone, but finding a seat can feel like a competition.

It’s a favorite hangout spot because of the centralized air conditioning, which makes students slow down and linger as they pass the building’s entrance.

For Arts and Letters students who manage to head upstairs, the 11th floor offers more seating space with accessible outlets and the same reliable air conditioning.

These are only a few of the study spots on campus that I’ve tried, and I can proudly say they actually work.
